![]() ![]() Taiwan has had a long history of activism and also became the first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2017. Generally, I think Taiwan has the most LGBTQ cultural and media output given its relatively small population combined with its relatively open government (on this specific topic). ![]() This post aims to to introduce LGBTQ Taiwanese movies, TV shows, podcasts, and vlogs for people who want to see, or listen to discussions by, Taiwanese queers on their lives and contemporary culture. Needless to say, I fell down the Taiwan rabbit hole. I had thought I’d just toss in all the content for the entire Greater China Region (Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China), as if 1/6th of the world’s population didn’t have enough to LGBTQ stories to tell on screen. This Taiwan LGBTQ content post mushroomed out of an ill-fated attempt to update “cultural media content” for Hong Kong. Feel free to DM me on Twitter if you have a link to share or directly create a PR on GitHub. I’ll try to update my commentary and add any updated stuff I come across. ![]() ![]() I’m sure it’s dated and has plenty of formatting errors. More than perhaps any other book, this collection by one of the most distinctive prose stylists of our era captures the unique time and place of Joan Didion’s focus, exploring subjects such as John Wayne and Howard Hughes, growing up in California and the nature of good and evil in a Death Valley motel room, and, especially, the essence of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury, the heart of the counterculture. First published in 1968, the collection was critically praised as one of the “best prose written in this country.” Now that some of the posturing and pronouncements of those times are being recycled, Didions sobering reflections are timely once. The history of Protestantism might interest none but Protestants the history of the Reformation is for all Christians, or rather all men. In the latter are too often seen a remarkable degeneracy from primitive principles, party intrigue, a sectarian spirit, and the impress of petty private feelings. In the former, every thing bears testimony to a revival of human nature, to a transformation, social and religious, emanating from God. The history of the Reformation is different from the history of Protestantism. ![]() My purpose is not to write the history of a party, but that of one of the greatest revolutions which has taken place among men-the history of a mighty impulse which was given to the world three centuries ago, and the influence of which is still, in our day, every where perceived. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Wolfgang amadeus mozart music![]() ![]() ![]() He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, though he later moved to Vienna, where he achieved fame but little financial security. Harrer, who is 85 now, kept quiet about his Nazi past until the Stern article was published. Whether that meant that he renounced previously held beliefs (or what exactly those beliefs were in the first place) is harder to ascertain. Harrer certainly lamented the Chinese takeover. Toward the end of the film, as Pitt’s Harrer contemplates the takeover of Tibet by the intolerant, totalitarian Chinese, he says in a voice-over, “I shudder to recall how once, long ago, I embraced the same beliefs.” For instance, when, at the beginning of the film, Harrer and an expedition party leave Austria for the as-yet unscaled Himalayan mountain Nanga Parbat, a journalist calls Harrer “a distinguished member of the National Socialist Party.” (The year is 1939.)
